Simon was a promising professional soccer player and played as a striker for Western Sydney Nomads. The club had a phenomenal run and finished first in the last league season. To celebrate their unprecedented success, the club's manager Bob Burr threw a lavish party at his mansion house in Double Bay. On his way to the party, in a busy intersection that was controlled by traffic lights, Simon collided his car with Danielle, who was busy applying her lipstick, failed to notice the red light and drove into the intersection. Simon suffered serious head and knee injury and was admitted to the emergency ward of the nearby hospital. In the emergency ward, he was seen by Jessica Vine, who had been working in the hospital for six months as a registered nurse. While Jessica was bandaging Simon's injuries, he informed her about leg pain. In the light of what Simon told her, she thought that the problem was not so serious and could wait until he was transferred to the regular ward. In fact, the pain was caused by a trapped nerve and he had lost the full use of his leg before he had received any treatment.

When the news of Simon's injury broke out at the party, Bob Burr's wife Patricia who knew Simon from his childhood and was very fond of him, fainted and hit her head on a table on the way down. She was knocked momentarily unconscious, and her wound required several stiches, but she mended quickly. When the news was shown on television later that night it was seen by Simon's mother Sarah who suffered profound shock and developed a recognised psychiatric illness.
