Simulation, simply put, is the process of generating values of random variables and computing the corresponding output measures (Anderson et al. 2016). As I have mentioned in previous discussion questions (DQ), I work in the biopharmaceutical industry, specializing in clinical research. Biopharmaceutical and biotechnological companies face numerous challenges during drug development--costs of development, time-to-market, and facility design for operations are some of the challenges in these two industries.

Drug manufacturing facility design involves many components and equipment. To address the challenges in manufacturing plant design and operations, simulation model is better suited to solve these challenges compared to linear programming model. According to Robinsonet al. (2017), plant simulation is a powerful modeling approach that can deliver answers to complex biotech and biopharma questions. The authors also argued that biotech and biopharma have an opportunity to implement simulation modeling in capital project scoping, facility debottlenecking, and facility scheduling. (2017).

Linear programming model is not suited for solving facilitydebottlenecking. Facility debottlenecking meansremoving the bottleneck in manufacturing plants).Debottlenecking is a process of pinpointing specific areas in plant equipment or workflow configurating that limits the flow of production (Murthy, 2020). To pinpoint these specific areas, simulation model is the best option because this model computes output measures in facility plant optimization compared to linear programming.
