SITUATION 1

Suppose that you and a friend are walking together. A stranger approaches you and offers to

give the two of you one hundred thousand dollars. There are no strings attached. The only

requirement, however, is that you have five minutes to decide how the two of you will share

the money. If you cannot agree within five minutes, no money will change hands.

What is your impulse in response to situation 1? What is your concept of fairness? Does

fairness enter into your thoughts at all? Do you offer to split the money equally?

What do you do if your friend objects to sharing the money equally? What if your friend says

that she is in greater need of money and should, therefore, receive 75 to 80 percent, or all of

the money? What if your friend is in dire need of that amount of money to pay a debt or to

pay for urgent medical surgery? What if you are in dire need of the money?
