Situation IV Industry/Warehousing A warehouse is often a busy, noisy place with the interaction of people and mechanized systems in a production environment (e.g., time is money). In these environments, it is sometimes difficult to balance the dynamic the tension between safety and efficiency in many ways which can result in suboptimal decision-making and outcomes.

Part I

Define the problem - Describe the conceptual problems that exist or potentially exist as well as consequences in various terms (experiential, accident, costs, loss of life, etc.) by giving brief overview (1-3 paragraphs, ideally just 1) of the situation that you are using and then on a separate line, state the problem in a single sentence. You may have up to different two problem sentences for each situation (one is sufficient though but, in case you are really engaged or, possibly unsure, you can have two).

Part II This section is key as it forms the basis for proposal to take to decision-makers that identifies a problem worth solving, gives some basis for a solution as well as its cost-effectiveness or value in other terms. You may also use your own experiences, but you must include text or other substantive, published, reviewed documentation as well for support.

1. Analysis & Support. For each of the problems in Part I, begin with a short narrative that provide evidence and support for a problem(s). In this section, set up the value and feasibility of the solution and end with a brief statement of the proposed solution(s).
2. Design & Solutioning. Begin by stating any key limitations and follow with the hypothesis for each in a way that can be evaluated and how you will measure it being sure to include a measurement scale and if the measure is objective or subjective. Elaborate briefly on the experimental design to test your hypothesis. Chapter Two of the text is a good reference for many experimental techniques as well as a number of cases and examples in the Additional Reference Materials.

Part III You will be assigned to a Group. For ONE of the issues that an individual in your assigned Group created, carefully review the situation and revise based on feedback from the instructor and/or Group input to construct a final submission for this portion that includes Parts a, b, & c.

1. Hypothetical Findings - In this section, summarize your findings of your hypothetical research. To do actual research takes more time and money than we have presently and, in a university setting, involves the use of an Institutional Review Board to ensure potential ethics issues are adequately considered. We dont have time for that so I am asking you to create data that tells a story. Simply pretend that you ran your experiment and make the data. Use appropriate statistical techniques to test it to see if your experiment has the desired effect(s). If it doesnt, adjust the data as needed. While in real life, you CANNOT do this without significant liability, doing it in this course allows two things: 1) speed/timeliness and, 2) reverse engineering findings can actually help you understand how data works and get a bet idea of how to properly construct things on the front end. IF we were to conduct this experiment, as written, wed need a few more details but the summary would look a lot like this for our purposes, this will give you great insight into setting up small experiments or even pilot programs to test assumptions. In the real world, you will often find it is much easier to get permission to test something to check assumptions, validate the approach, and learn things you didnt anticipate before making plans to go to enterprise-wide global scale.
2. Hypothetical Data & Tests In this section, paste summaries or otherwise summarize your analysis.

c. Discussion, Reflection, & Alternatives In this section, you should create 1-3 paragraphs that is useful for reviewers or comments on the experiment or results.
