Situation: You are completing your final week of a work/study program with an accounting firm. Your responsibilities to date include completing the accounting work of smaller clients assigned to a full- time accounting employee currently on sick leave. The last week of the work assignment, your manager assigns you a complicated reconciliation report related to large, profitable, and unfamiliar client. You are expected to complete the report before your assignment ends.
There is a large amount of data to review. You have no experience with the complex corporate structure and are unfamiliar with the company's operations, chart of accounts and accounting statements. You have not completed a similar reconciliation report before and are concerned that you are not sufficiently experienced to complete the work alone. You want to do the work correctly, but your manager has not provided additional information, offered support, or assigned a mentor.
If you do not meet the deadline or do not accurately complete the reconciliation, your performance review and recommendation could be negatively affected.
