Summative Assessments
The summative assessments are the major activities designed to assess your skills, knowledge and performance, as required to show competency in this unit. These activities should be completed after finishing the Learner Guide. You should complete these as stated below and as instructed by your trainer/assessor.
Skills, knowledge and performance may be termed as:
- Skills- skill requirements, required skills, essential skills, foundation skills
- Knowledge - knowledge requirements, required knowledge, essential knowledge, knowledge evidence
- Performance - evidence requirements, critical aspects of assessment, performance evidence.
Section A: Skills Activity
The Skills Activity is designed to be a series of demonstrative tasks that should be assessed by observation (by the assessor or third party, depending on the circumstances).
It will demonstrate all of the skills required for this unit of competency - your assessor will provide further instructions to you, if necessary.
Section B: Knowledge Activity (Q & A)
The Knowledge Activity is designed to be a verbal questionnaire where the assessor asks you a series of questions to confirm your competency for all of the required knowledge in the unit of competency.
Section C: Performance Activity
The Performance Activity is designed to be a practical activity performed either in the workplace or a simulated environment. You should demonstrate the required practical tasks for the unit of competency and be observed by the assessor and/or third party, as applicable to the situation. If the third party is required to observe you, you will need to make the required arrangements with them.
If necessary for the activities, you should attached completed written answers, portfolios or any evidence of competency to this workbook.
Section A: Skills Activity
Objective: To provide you with an opportunity to show you have the required skills for this unit.
This activity will enable you to demonstrate the following skills:
- Reading skills to:
- interpret unfamiliar and complex materials describing regulatory requirements for WHS management systems and internal reports providing operational feedback about the effectiveness of practices
- develop comprehensive yet easily accessible WHS policies, procedures and template documents
- Writing skills to:
- construct high level reports about the effectiveness of WHS management practices and rationale for any change
- Oral communication skills to:
- discuss training needs with key supervisory and management personnel
- interview personnel about incidents, accidents, or near misses
- Problem-solving skills to:
- allow for a logical evaluation of the characteristics and needs of the organisation in order to design a tailored WHS system
- take a lead role in controlling risks and implementing interim or emergency solutions
- manage the response to any incident or accident
- Teamwork skills to:
- consult with key personnel and incorporate their views to develop an effective WHS system
- Planning and organising skills to:
- plan for, establish and regularly monitor all components of a WHS management system
Answer the activity in as much detail as possible, considering your organisational requirements.
- As a workplace activity (or simulated workplace activity), gather documentation and research the applicable WHS/OHS legislation, regulations, standards and codes of practice in preparation of developing a work health and safety system. From you research, make a high-level report on your current system and its effectiveness.
- With regards to training of staff, assess needs and discuss how staff training can be improved with other work health and safety personnel, work together to ensure employees are made aware of health and safety. Use your problem-solving skills to find workable solutions to keep within any resource constraints. Document your findings.
- Plan and organise how you can monitor the system to keep a check on all components.
This activity will need to be observed in the workplace by the trainer/assessor or third party, and all observations recorded in the observations and demonstrations checklist document.
Section B: Knowledge Activity (Q & A)
Objective: To provide you with an opportunity to show you have the required knowledge for this unit.
The answers to the following questions will enable you to demonstrate your knowledge of:
- Structure, characteristics and needs of the organisation that the WHS system must address
- Objectives, components and comprehensive details of relevant state or territory OHS or WHS legislation
- Objectives, components and comprehensive details of WHS codes of practice and standards developed by industry or regulatory bodies
- Ramifications of failure to observe OHS or WHS laws and codes of practice
- Methods of receiving updated information on OHS or WHS laws and codes of practice
- Components of WHS management systems
- Considerations in the formulation of WHS policies and procedures
- Consultative processes
- Time requirements for hazard identification
- Approaches to assessing the effectiveness of WHS management systems
- Methods used by the specific industry sector and organisation to establish and maintain WHS systems

Objective: To provide you with an opportunity to demonstrate the required performance elements for this unit.
This activity will enable you to demonstrate the following performance evidence:
- Establish and implement a complete work health and safety (WHS) system that covers the following components:
- adequate facilities for the welfare of employees
- appropriate management of incidents or accidents and notification to WHS government regulators
- availability of information, instructions, training and supervision that ensure employees' health and safety
- safe working systems, environment, and equipment and tools
- Evaluate and identify improvements to WHS practices within the above system
- Develop comprehensive WHS system documents to support above system
- Demonstrate management practices that must be established and maintained for compliance of above system with state or territory occupational health and safety (OHS) or WHS legislation

- As a workplace activity (or simulated workplace activity), establish a complete work health and safety system that covers:
- Facilities for the welfare of employees, e.g. rest rooms and working areas
- Management of incident and accidents within the working environment, including when notification is required to work health and safety government regulators
- Health and safety information, workplace instructions, supervision and applicable training for employees
- Working systems and premises which are safe for all to use.
- Evaluate the system that you have created and assess if any improvements could or should be made; ensure you have documented your work.
- Develop the work health and safety system documents that are needed to support your WHS system, and the management practices that will need to be established and implemented to ensure its compliance.
This activity will need to be observed in the workplace by the trainer/assessor or third party, and all observations recorded in the observations and demonstrations checklist document.
