Slip systems Consider the drawing of the face centered cubic (fcc) unit cell. (a) In class we discussed that the major slip systems involved slip planes with the highest planar density of atoms and slip directions within those planes with the shortest slip distance. In HW1, you calculated that the planar density for the {111} family of planes to be 2.309/a2 atoms /m2 where a is the lattice parameter in meters. For comparison, calculate the planar density for the {100} AND {110} family of planes in terms of the lattice parameter, a. (b) Which family of planes are the slip planes for the fcc crystal structure? Why? (c) On the drawing below, draw one of the major (low energy) slip planes AND the slip directions that are contained within that slip plane for the fcc crystal structure. (d) What are the Miller indices for the slip plane AND slip directions that you drew? (Do not use the family of planes or direction notation, but rather give the individual name of each plane/direction and use proper notation.) (e) How many of these type of major (low energy) slip systems are found in total in the fcc structure
