Slope and Safety The Department of Justice's Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed in 1990. It is a federal law prohibiting discrimination on the basis of disability, with the goals of ensuring equal access and benefit to all people. Stemming from ADA, the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design created accessibility standards for public facilities that can be enforced under a federal court of law. Everyday we interact with elements that require "smooth" connections to make them useful and safe. One example are ramps that we use in public spaces that are specifically designed to safely accommodate wheelchairs, walkers, and motorized scooters.
