Social networking services like Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook are joined by more teens each year. These allow teens to make an online representation of themselves and interact with many other people, including adults. According to a survey of teens 13-17 (Pew Research Center, 2018), over 90% use one of these platforms.

Although these websites have potential to enhance teens' social skills and cultural knowledge, they have made the news for their role in cyberbullying; repetitive, intentional harm (aggression) through the use of electronic devises. Hinduja and Patchin (2007) found in a survey of 6-8 graders that about 17% were victims of cyberbullying. Common acts of cyberbullying are posting harassing messages about the victim or posting embarrassing photos of the victim on social networking websites for all to see. For example, this 11th grader writes about her experience, "My ex-boyfriend and his friends leave disgusting comments in my guestbook at [a diary-hosting website]. Though I have locked my diary so that they no longer have access to it, they continue to leave hurtful comments in my guestbook. They have threatened bodily harm, and have even gone so far as to say that they would kill me in my sleep" (Burgess-Proctor, Hinduja, and Patchin, 2008).

What is the motivation to engage in cyberbullying? you think that cyberbullying is more likely to occur than traditional schoolyard bullying? you think there is a gender difference in cyberbullying? What you think the emotional effects of being cyberbullied are? What can parents or teachers do to help prevent cyberbullying and help those who have been victims?
