The Issue

Your textbook and this module emphasize the importance of social theories to the discipline of sociology. While sociologists agree on the value of social theory to the sociological imagination, they seldom agree on which major theoretical perspective best explains Canadian society today, and why. I invite you to offer your opinion on this ongoing debate. State which of the five sociological theories (functionalism, conflict theory, symbolic interactionism, feminism, or postmodernism) best explains Canadian society today, and why. A strong answer will always provide a rationale for the response, and if possible, a relevant example. A thorough reading of this chapter will provide enough material for you to form your own opinion. And remember your opinion is just as valid as anyone else's.
