SOLUTION-BASED THEORY INTERVENTION: "MIRACLE QUESTION"
**Please see the case conceptualization below for Jason**
As part of this assignment, I chose the intervention 'Miracle Question' to help as part of his solution-based theory. Please help me explain in detail the steps I should take and how I would help create goals and then break those down into the small steps needed to change the environment with the problem.
____________________________________________ THE MIRACLE QUESTION
The "Miracle Question" is theopening piece of the processof developing well-formed goals. It gives clients permission to think about an unlimited range of possibilities for change. It begins to move the focus away from their current and past problems and toward a more satisfying life.
FOLLOW-UP QUESTIONS
Through follow-up questions, the interviewer further extends and amplifies the impact of the miracle by a series of questions designed to guide the client in exploring the implications of the miracle in the client's life. ____________________________________________
Case Conceptualization
Case of: Jason
Theory: Constructivist Theory: Solution-Focused
Presenting Problem: Jason is a 38-year-old Jewish Caucasian male who is having difficulties with his relationships, occupation, and social system. His complaints include depression, loneliness, despair, and hopelessness. He has kept his relationship with Kevin from his family, friends, colleagues, and Rabbi. Kevin, who is Mormon, has also kept their relationship hidden. Neither of them wants their relationship to be found out because they feel it would ruin their lives. Because their pattern of interactions has revolved around secrecy, there has been a lack of affection between the two of them (Capuzzi et al., 2022). So, when Jason learned that Kevin was engaging in pornography online and explicit conversations in chat rooms, he blamed himself. As it relates to Kevin, Jason is desperate and doesn't know what to do. In his mind, Kevin is the only thing that gives his life meaning and purpose, but he isn't sure how to proceed.
Hypothesis: Jason has been overworking himself to escape the problem and put it out of his mind. Jason is afraid to talk to Kevin about this since he seems to rely heavily on him. In addition, Jason seems to have no one else to turn to for help because no one knows about their relationship. As a result of this problem, Jason's anxiety and fear of Kevin being unfaithful has increased to the point that he has bad dreams at night.
Goals: West-Olatunji and Rush-Ossenbeck (2022) assert that Solution-Focused therapy focuses on the solution rather than the problem, so we will use solution-talk rather than problem-talk to attain Jason's therapy goals. The first step is to determine what the client hopes to accomplish from counseling. Positive goals will be framed with the expectation of change (West-Olatunji & Rush-Ossenbeck, 2022). Through counseling, Jason will identify what he wants to achieve, and he will describe the changes he expects to see. Second, Jason hopes to find out what his life would be like if "the miracle" came true. He will be able to see a life without secrets and depression. The next step is to find out "what the person is already doing or has done in the past that might help the client achieve his or her goals (the hoped-for situation)" (West-Olatunji & Rush-Ossenbeck, 2022). Jason will discover if he has accomplished situations that he hoped for in the past. A final step is to find out how the client's life would be different if they took a small step towards realizing their hopes (West-Olatunji & Rush-Ossenbeck, 2022). By making a few small yet brave changes, Jason will see that the life he wants with Kevin is possible.
