Some materials, like a paperclip, are attracted by a magnet, but other materials are not. There is a little bit more to this story than meets the eye. Because water or a piece of wood are not attracted to a magnet, they cannot be picked up with a magnet. However, the water and piece of wood can actually be pushed awayat least in theory. The electrons that spin around atoms create very tiny magnetic fields. In atoms or molecules in which electrons are paired together, a weak magnetic field that opposes the magnetic field of any magnet brought close by is created. These type of materials are called diamagnetic materials. Both water and wood are diamagnetic materials, so they are repelled by a magnet. Now, this effect is very weak, so a refrigerator magnet has no hope of pushing or levitating a glass of water or a tree. A stronger magneta really, really strong magnetmight be able to do so, though.Research the topic of superconducting magnets, diamagnetism, and levitation. Then, answer the following questions. 1 What can superconducting magnets be used for? 2 What materials and objects have scientists managed to lift using very strong magnetic fields? 3 If scientists are able to make even stronger magnets in the future, what do you think are some possible uses of these magnets
