South Africa has seen 4 alcohol bans since March 2020, lasting 160 days in total. It has put 250 000 jobs at risk with an estimated impact of R64.8 billion on the economy. The motivation was to flatten the curve and avail capacity in hospitals.

When applying the RIMS strategy to a practical scenario, you should ask yourself the following four critical questions:

Who are the parties involved? (Who are the disputing groups)
What is the problem? (What are they disputing)
Why is it a problem?
What can be done about this problem?
After answering the four critical question, you then have to apply the RIMS strategy to the practical scenario as follows:

Step 1: Generate and evaluate all point of views;
Step 2: Identify the implications; and
Step 3: Find solutions.
