1. Top-down effects: Reverse Lyrics Play Stairway to Heaven for you both forward and in reverse for a friend or family member. 1) Play the song regularly for them. 2) Play the song in reverse and ask them if they hear anything. 3) Show them the "reversed lyrics" and have them listen to the song in reverse again. 4) Assure them that the lyrics aren't really there and then explain "top-down" effects.

2. Bad Lip-Reading - A "Reverse" McGurk Effect - Only do ONE video. In these clips, the editors have dubbed in other (much funnier) words, yet the lip movements seem to fit the new words almost perfectly. Watch one (or more of the clips) with a friend or familymember. IMPORTANT! Choose a clip that best fits the interest of the person (Ex: If they are a sports fan, pick the NFL video, etc.) Write down their reaction (and yours if you haven't seen it before). The choices include: Hunger Games, NFL, Game of Thrones.

3. Top-down effect: Misheard Lyrics In this video, different lyrics are shown for a classic song. Watch the clips with a friend or family member. Write down their reaction (and yours if you haven't seen it before). (And, NO, those are not actually the lyrics! It's a top-down effect!). Note: This effect will not work well for people who are not fluent in English or who know Latin.
4. McGurk Effect Have a friend or family member watch the video and record their responses. Explain the McGurk effect to the person.
Please address these questions in your report for the videos you selected:
1. How did you explain top-down effects, in your own words (you should write at least 2-3 sentences here)? What was your reaction to the reverse lyrics? What was the other person's reaction?
2. Which video did you choose? What was your reaction to the bad lip reading video? What was the other person's reaction?
3. What was your reaction to the misheard lyrics video? What was the other person's reaction?
4. How did you explain the McGurk effect (think about not only what is happening in the video but what this says about our perception of speech)? What was the other person's reaction?
