Statement of Problem: You are a consultant hired by a major wind energy supplier to: find a least cost transmission corridor from a proposed energy collection point (for a set of wind turbines) to a step down transformer station in the city that will receive the energy. Establish the percentage of population that is under 10 in the census meshblocks that the transmission corridor passes through. This is to investigate a perceived abnormal effect of power lines on young children. Objective: For each of the two stages, the output must represent the following specific criteria being met: find a least cos transmission corridor from the turbines to the city. i. The least cost transmission corridor will favour a path that minimizes traversing of steep slopes, the flatter the better . The least cost transmission corridor must avoid ocean and will favour rural, industrial and cheaper residential land. More expensive residential land and commercial areas should be avoided if at all possible (this is a specific example). Additional information: 1. The least cost transmission corridor will have an explicit start point and end point Establish the percentage of population that is under 10 in the census meshblocks that the transmission corridor passes through. i. Meshblocks for this stage in the analysis should be selected if it overlaps with the corridor of the power line's influence. The influence of the power line is deemed to be 5 km on either side (this value is an example) a. Task: Outline in detail how you would use a GIS (e.g. QGIS or ArcGIS) to solve the following problem. Your answer should include: description of the data required (spatial and attribute), including format; (12 marks) b. stating the GIS data model you would use to address the problem; (6 marks) describing the analysis operations that must be performed using the data; (12 marks) d. a process flow diagram that shows how all data and analytical operations are linked, through to the final output, and; (12 marks) identifying the information products (output) to be produced and presented to the wind energy supplier. (6 marks) c. e.
