Overindulgence of children refers to giving them too much of what looks good, too soon without even the child asking for it. Researches say that parents sometimes give things and experiences to their children which are not appropriate for their age or interest.

Step 2

There are 3 different kinds of overindulgence:

1. Giving the child too much can be damaging. They might start disrespecting the things they are getting and have problems with delayed gratification in later life.
2. Over nurturing of children: The major task of parents is to help the child prepare for their adult life. So the parents play an important role by equipping them with various range of life skills and helping them be independent. If the child is over-pampered he will not develop a personal identity and won’t be able to cope with adult life.
3. Not providing enough structure: Children require proper rules and clear instructions to function. Children want a healthy amount of expectation placed on them in the form of household chores or other responsibilities. This helps the child to develop respect for an authority figure and understand the importance of responsibilities. When there is an absence of structure the children don’t learn these values.

Therefore, overindulgence can have a damaging effect on the child and their surrounding, whose effects can be seen in trouble in developing personal identity, incompetence, irrational problems, irresponsibility towards their actions, difficulty in delayed gratification which leads to acts of robbery or sexual offenses.
