Sterilization of fermentation medium
Sterilization is a process in which the growth medium to be used in fermentation is brought to high temperatures in the presence of steam, and kept for at least 20 minutes at this temperature in order to kill any bacterial spores which may lead to contamination later on during fermentation.
A total of 10000kg of sterile concentrated growth medium needs to be obtained prior to use in a fermentation process. A steam generation device can supply saturated steam at 220C for sterilization each time it is used. The engineers intend to obtain the sterilized medium using the following process, in which they dilute a concentrated medium with steam to obtain a diluted medium that is sterilized and ready for use in fermentation.
a) Write the general energy balance equation, and indicate which terms may be omitted for this process.
b) How much steam is required? How much concentrated medium is required?
Note 1: The growth medium can be assumed have the same properties as that of water
Note 2: The steam table you need to solve this problem is attached to this homework.
