Sterling Archer, 3 8 , has recently inherited his family's business from his mother Mallory ( 7 8 ) , who has decided to retire.

Sterling Archer, 38, has recently inherited his family's business from his mother Mallory (78), who has decided to retire. This comes with a 51% stake in the company which last year generated $25,435,000 in Net Income which has also historically issued a 20% dividend to its shareholders. But along with this windfall, comes additional costs attributed to personally financing his mother's expenses as well as his current legacy expenses that consist of the following (all expenses were the previous years expenses):
Mallory Archer - $350,000
Lana Kane (39), former partner of Sterling - $250,000
AJ Kane Archer (6), daughter of Lana and Sterling - $85,000
Lana generates a salary (after taxes) of $280,000 which covers her expenses and a portion of AJ's costs. Archer's salary of $275,000 last year just covered his own expenses (after taxes). In addition, Sterling has a portfolio of $1.85 million. As a graduate of portfolio management, he decides to employ you to help him with his finances.
"My work is very dangerous which is why I love my job...I am a bit of an extreme junkie hedonist."
"I am currently taxed at the 30% on the income level and 19% on capital gains and dividends."
"According to the government, inflation is expected to run at 3.8% for the indefinite future. Both the company's income, salaries and expenses should keep in line with the pace of inflation."
"The markets are like the casino, let the dice roll and hope it isn't craps."
"If I make it to my motijer's age miraculously, I would hope to follow in her footsteps and retire, passing the company down to AJ, and in the event of my passing, my portfolio as well."
"I am not worried about AJ's education, my mother has separately left' a 529 plan in place for her."
A year has passed, and things have changed dramatically for Sterling. His family's business is temporarily in disarra as the government has frozen its assets. He now has to rely on his own portfolio to generate returns. Assuming that all the previous information was true except for the following adjustments:
His portfolio grew an ADDITIONAL $1,750,000
The initial quoted expenses of Sterling, Mallory, Lana and AJ remained the same
Sterling has forgone his salary
What would now the return requirement be on Sterling's portfolio?
