In music, a scale is any set of musical notes ordered by their fundamental frequency and pitch and an octave is an interval whose higher note has a fundamental frequency twice that of its lower note. A scale dividing a C-C octave into twelve notes is shown below. Starting from the lower C note, the interval is evenly divided in terms of its frequency so each successive frequency is 2(1/12) times frequency of the previous note, and so that the fundamental frequency of the higher C is twice that of the lower C. The neck of the guitar (fretboard) contains metal slots called frets, and the fretboard is used by holding down the strings against each fret and then plucking them.
