Structure & Classification of Galaxies The Hubble Tuning Fork Galaxies are traditionally classified based on their appearance in a telescope. This is not the only way to assign galaxies into groups, nor is it even necessarily the best one. Nevertheless, the old, visual categories are sticking around. This is partly due to tradition astronomers are notoriously resistant to abandoning old conventions--and partly due to the usefulness of the old classifications By a stroke of scientific good fortune, the original categories developed by Edwin Hubble reflect many important features including the average age of the stars in the galaxy and the evolutionary history of the galaxy itselfone might wish to study about galaxies. Hubble's classification scheme appears in the shape of a tuning fork, so today we call it \"Hubble's Tuning Fork Diagram. A schematic example of the diagram is pictured below.
