Case study A large academic hospital has relied on a mainframe platform for its data and applications for years. But maintaining legacy technology has become a distraction for the hospital-diverting time, money, and other resources away from its central mission-caring for patients. Each dollar spent on maintaining their cumbersome mainframe system could be used to improve patient care. But as annual maintenance costs approached the $1 million markand as skilled mainframe personnel became scarcer due to retirement and a skills shortage in the marketthe organisation decided to move from mainframe to the cloud. After their annual management strategic meeting, they came up with a list of goals that they would like to achieve so that they can do things more efficiently and in a way that positions them for the future. Simplifying IT became their strategic priority, including improving patient care through great stewardship of patient and other essential data, more efficient operations, and an improved employee experience. To begin transforming its data and applications landscape, significantly reduce costs, and address the shrinking mainframe specialist labour pool, they tried to understand the value that resided in the mainframe environment and to determine a way to get it out. But with a tremendous amount of data and applications still residing in the mainframe, becoming a cloud-driven organization would require a major effort to analyse the resources and define a path forward. Leveraging the knowledge of mainframe and health care specialists, the hospital conducted a thorough inventory of all its existing mainframe assets, including an analysis of their value and retention policies. The assessment uncovered 54 applications and 53 databases on mainframe, most of which were retired or nearing retirement. Although those assets might have been retired in the move to the cloud, lengthy data retention policies due to the nature of the data required that the organization maintain data for most of the applications. Legacy HR apps and data have been a significant element of the hospital cloud migration project, as they continue to be essential day to day. With the advent of Kubernetes, we will see more and more companies move to the cloud. Kubernetes is a game changer because it makes it easy to manage and deploy applications in the cloud. With Kubernetes, you can scale your application up or down as needed. This means that you can save money by only paying for the resources that you need. Cloud emerged as an obvious choice as it looked to simplify IT and streamline its business processes through a true enterprise-level pilot projectwith cloud offering lower total cost of ownership, scalability, and rapid innovation. After considering the top three cloud service providers in the market, namely AWS, GCP, and Microsoft Azure, you decided to conduct the pilot project with Azure. As part of the mainframe-to-cloud migration, the hospital made historical mainframe data available via a cloud app, through Tableau reports and an SQL server on Azure. The management has been worried that their initial capital expenses (CAPEX) in this project might not produce good return on investment (ROI) and lengthy payback period.
