Study the note on the purpose of research design below and answer the questions that follow. Jenkins. Zapf. Winefield. and Sarris (2012) undertook a study into workplace bullying which focused on the perspectives of those accused of this behaviour. Their study published in the British Joumal of Management is based on an analysis of interviews conducted with 24 managers accused of workplace bullying. They describe how many of these many accused managers reported that their places of work were highly stressful. and marked by staff shortages, unclear roles. conict and wide-ranging improper workplace behaviours. Jenkins 9! at. (2012:491) commenced their research with a stated aim and two research questions. Their research aim was 'to elicit the views. perceptions and attributions of the alleged perpetrator, helping to bridge the gap between perpetrator and target-orientated approaches to examining workplace bullying'. Their research questions were '(1) What behaviours have the accused bullies been accused of? Do these behaviours t the recognised denitions of workplace bullying? (2) How do the accused bullies describe the complainants\" behaviour?' They described their study as being exploratory, in order to seek to understand the perceptions and experiences of those accused of workplace bullying. However, the article demonstrates that the scope of their research project was not only exploratory but also descriptive and explanatory. To understand this phenomenon, they used semi-structured interviews that allowed (from the perspective of an alleged perpetrator) behaviours to be described and workplace factors to be discussed. These led to explanation building for some aspects of these behaviours during the analysis of the data collected. Jenkins et al. (2012) described how they used an analytical approach that identied themes in their data and then examined how these related to existing theory in relevant literature. In this way, the results from their study confirmed the importance of organisational climate and workplace pressures as contributory, if not causal, factors in the incidence of workplace bullying a relationship also identied from research on workplace bullying that focuses on the perspective of those being bullied. However, Jenkins ef al. (2012) acknowledged that the results of their study may raise doubts about some accepted relationships about workplace bullying: notably that workplace bullying is necessary downward (they report descriptions of upward bullying) and that the demarcation between being a perpetrator and a target of bullying may in some cases be ill dened. The study demonstrated how a combination of exploratory, descriptive and explanatory research helps to generate a theoretical contribution. REQUIRED: Research design reects primarily the purpose of research; therefore. before the design of a study can be developed. its purpose or purposes should be formulated. Discuss the following purposes of research design described in Jenkins ef af's (2012) study: 6.1 Exploration. (6 marks)6.2 Description. (7 marks)6.3 Explanation. (7 marks)
