TOPIC: This house believes that the benefits of martial law in the Philippines, such as enhanced security and stability, outweigh the potential risks to civil liberties and human rights.

A. The stability and security of the local community were far from ideal, and instead of its promised stability and prosperity, the imposition of Martial Law generated intense social conflicts and a worsening economic crisis. Growing civil discontent and political opposition combined with a restive military to resist the repressive Marcos regime (Bonn Juego, 2022). Amnesty international has documented extrajudicial killings, torture, and enforced disappearances of at least 11,000 wvictims.Apart from local and/or foreign dvilians in the community, human right defenders, legal aid lawyers, journalists, church workers, and labor leaders that are at least 50,000 people, were arrested and detained from the year 1972-1975. Measuring the predicaments of Martial law in the Philippines, the number of deaths coming from the deaths of innocent dvilians, and the inhuman treatment of Filipinos are sufficdent testimony to prove that it planted more harm and good. Subsequently, history tells us that Filipinos are too thirsty for progress, to the extent that they view the Marcos administration as a springboard to these goals, romanticizing. Martial law without fully grasping the historical backdrop (Sodipe, 202 2). With that being said, history dearly stipulates that there is no security and stability under these darkest shades of the past but rather abuse to those vulnerable members of society, especially those who shout for human rights and try to bridge the gap between justices (Amnesty International, 2022). Furthermore, the only benefit of Martial law lies in the extension of power and the opportunity for the authority to take advantage of the general public to display their iron fist for their own benefit. These are seen and experienced by real people, voiceless Filipinos who will forever be hunted by their unfulfilled mission: to achieve justice (Magramo, 2022). Martial law will never be a band-aid solution to social problems, for it has been proven to worsen social dilemmas, which remain a grave concern up to the current events. The expense ofliving in general and of commodities has increased to unaffordable levels, making the cost of living unbearable for a normal Filipino family. A socdety devoid of democracy under Martial law will lead to oppression, ceaseless violence, and uncertainty regarding a great number of human rights violations such as tortures, extrajudicial killings, incarcerations, and forced disappearance (Mateo, 2023).
