1. Download the Design Thinking Process Template Download Design Thinking Process Templateand record your responses to each of the five steps as you think through the hypothetical design or development of a service or product that might help your social issue.
   • NOTE: You won't actually design or develop a service or product; this is a hypothetical situation to help you practice the design thinking process.
2. Empathize: Select two of the following methods and explain what you would do to complette the empathize step.
   • Observe (How would you observe?)
   • Engage (How would you engage?)
   • Watch and listen (How would you watch and listen?)
3. Define:
   • Define your issue ( domestic abuse - main issue)
   • Define your user (those affected by the issue).
   • Define your solution.
   • Creatte a problem statement.
4. Ideate:
   • List 3-5 different solutions.
   • Include an explanation of how you came up with each solution idea.
     • Be creative!
5. Prototype:
   • Creatte a hypothetical solution plan.
   • If it is an organization, outline some funding or operations ideas.
6. Test:
   • If possible, contact someone working in your approved social issue to discuss your hypothetical solution.
   • If not, plan how you would test it. For instance, what specific measurements would you use?
   • Contrast your solution with at least one existing solution that solves the same or a similar issue.
7. Refer to the resources and tips below to help you complette this assignment.
   • Customize the template.
8. Don't stress; use a hypothetical product or service.
9. Focus on the design thinking process, not your hypothetical product or service.
10. Refer to all materials from the W04 Study page, especially, "An Introduction to Design Thinking: Process Guide."
    • To demonstrate mastery, integrate ideas from the study page materials.

Narrator:Application activity 4 design thinking. Design thinking and social innovation go hand in hand. They both focus on empathy, gathering information and creating the best solutions possible. Although design thinking is a skill that will take a long time to master, in this course you will at least be able to begin to understand the process.

In this activity you demonstrate a basic understanding of each step of design by applying it to your social issue. Be sure to use the introduction to the design thinking process guide as you work on this assignment. You implement the 5 step process for a hypothetical process or service that might help address your approved social issue, using the template provided as a base and the template is shown here.

A few things to keep in mind: this assignment asks you to tell what you would do in each of the five steps, you don't have to actually do them. For example, for empathize tell what you would do to serve, engage, watch or listen. Be creative and make them template your own. What we mean when we say product or service is that some social issues can be addressed with an actual product like a well or a water filter and some are better addressed with a service, meaning tutoring, counselling and rehabilitation etc. We'll learn more about this later.

To demonstrate mastery, be sure to include ideas from readings or videos. Your focus should be on the process and not as much on the actual hypothetical situation--solution.
