Summit works in a large milling operation in Ontario, He has been with the company for many years, starting as a labourer and over time being promoted to a management position. The company has grown to a size of about 300 employees, of which 80% of the workforce are men, primarily of Southeast Asian background. Given the current awareness of diversity and inclusion, senior management decided that it was important to have a more diverse workforce, Senior management met with all the managers and supervisors, explained what they were trying to achieve, and engaged everyone in discussions regarding barriers and workplace behaviour. All the managers and supervisors were supportive of the direction the company wished to take. About a month later, a female employee filed a complaint against Summit alleging gender discrimination. Based upon the company's own procedures, an investigation was launched. The investigation concluded that Summit did not discriminate but identified that Summit was not completely fulfilling the responsibilities of a manager, especially in relation to training employees about appropriate behaviour at work. As a result, Summit was reassigned to another job that the company felt he could do. He was not pleased with the reassignment and began to show his anger and unhappiness at work. He also tended to say things to people (particularly women) who he felt were "out to get him." Several months after Summit's reassignment, a number of female workers complained to the senior managers about the hostile work environment that was being created. Again, another investigation was done, which concluded that Summit had been retaliating against those who had complained earlier. He was instructed to stop the behaviour and also to take a new training course that focused on creating a respectful and inclusive workplace. Summit's new role included training employees on how to operate a certain machine. Among the new trainees was a woman who asked lots of questions. Summit tended to answer the questions sharply and was less than helpful. Again, another complaint was launched about Summit's discriminatory behaviour.
