Supply Chain Woes Yesterday morning we awoke to the news that The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore was hit by a freighter and collapsed. In addition, to the human toll, the bridge's collapse may have implications for supply chains here and abroad. The collapsed bridge blocks access to the Port of Baltimore (POB) and the operations of the port were suspended (Abramowicz, 2024). POB is closer to the U.S. Midwest than other east coast ports and serves as a main trade conduit for commodity products, and autos (Abramowicz, 2024). "Baltimore port's private and public terminals handled 847,158 autos and light trucks in 2023, the most of any U.S. port. The port also handles farm and construction machinery, sugar, gypsum and coal" (Reuters, 2024, paras 13-14)
