The Case of the Nativity Scene Oliver is a Master's-level social work student doing a practicum at a The Lopestown Community Development Center, which also gives advice and support to local neighborhood groups, one of which is The Havocs. The small-town community is largely white, working-class, and devout Christians. It is September, and Oliver attends his first neighborhood organizing meeting. Some members of The Havocs are furious that the town will no longer allow a nativity scene in front of the town hall, which has been a tradition for over 100 years, because of a Supreme Court ruling. One especially angry Havoc states that this happened because "ungodly atheists and Jews have taken over the country." Another Havoc states, "Barring the nativity scene from the town hall is an attack on religious freedom and a rejection of Jesus. We are being persecuted for our faith." These and similar statements receive widespread support by those in attendance. The Havocs dominate the discussion of several possible options and they favor a protest strategy that will involve civil disobedience, loud praying and singing, and arrests. They plan to have townspeople, including the elderly and young children, set up the nativity scene in defiance of the law then gather around it and sing Christmas carols, preventing police from tearing it down and daring them to arrest them. Oliver, who is a spiritual person but not affiliated with any church, is disturbed and unsure about this plan, and he's upset by some of the statements at the meeting that were anti-Semitic and prejudicial. He knows that as a stranger in town, he needs to be cautious and civil in what he says. Also, he believes in the social work values of self-determination and empowerment. The Havocs want to know whether "he wants to fight with them against persecution and is willing to go to jail with them." His initial response is that he's just a student and not a member of the community but wants to understand and learn.
