Suppose researchers want to find out if having parents actively converse with their child improves the child's vocabulary. They recruit 40 sets of parents to take part in the study. Twenty are randomly assigned to spend 30 minutes a day reading a short book with their child, followed by an active question and answer period. This is done five days a week for four weeks. The remaining 20 parents are in a control group, unaware of the nature of the project. They are placed on a waiting list and can take part later. Researchers administer a vocabulary test for children before the study begins, and after. At the second time point, they also ask the parents who were in the control group, on the waiting list, to describe their interactions with their children during that time frame. The researchers find that those children in the active conversation group had higher vocabulary scores
