Suppose that the Fiji Government is trying to control two sources of pollution into Waimanu River, Fiji's main source of water supply for urban areas. The Fiji Water Authority can clean up the discharges and reduce pollution levels from these sources but there are, of course, costs involved. The damage effects of each pollution source are measured on a 'pollution scale'. The lower the pollution level the greater the cost of achieving it, as is shown by the cost schedules for cleaning up the two pollution sources: P1= 50021 0.5 ; P2 = 70042 0.5 Where P1 and P2 are pollution levels and C1 and C2 are expenditure on reducing pollution. To secure an acceptable level of water purity in the Waimanu River, the Fiji Water Authority's objective is to reduce pollution to a concentration level of 1100, with the cheapest method. Use the Lagrangian model to calculate the costs (C1 & C2) and pollution levels (P1 & P2) for each source in order to achieve the required pollution level. Show ALL working.(16 marks)
