Suppose two groups of subjects were given a Wason selection task problem. Both groups got a problem using the same, unfamiliar rule - "if you eat sago, you wear a headband on your head" Both groups read a background scenario about a traditionally living people on the island of Mentawai, some of whom eat sago and some of whom wear headbands. One group (group A) also reads that sago is a rare and prized food on the island, and only shaman are allowed to eat it. Shaman go through long periods of costly initiation to get their position and they mark that by wearing a headband. This information should transform the descriptive rule into a social contract because it conditions a benefit on paying a cost. The second group (group B) does not read this extra information. The results of this experiment are that 70% of group A solved the task correctly, and only 20% of group B solved the task correctly.
