Swearing, Choice, and Pain Sensitivity Data A group of psychology researchers were interested in the analgesic (pain relieving) properties of swearing and of personal choice. They recruited 100 volunteers for a study. Each volunteer was instructed to submerge their hand into ice cold water and hold it there for as long as possible. The volunteers were divided into 5 groups of 20 each. The groups determined what the volunteers could say and do to attempt to relieve the pain of the ice-cold water: Silent - volunteers in this group were required to remain silent. Word - volunteers in this group were assigned an innocuous (non-swear) word (e.g. "potato", "coffee") which they could say or yell. They could not say any other word. Swear - volunteers in this group were assigned a swear word which they could say or yell. They could not say any other word. WordChoose - volunteers in this group could say or yell any innocuous word of their choosing. SwearChoose - volunteers in this group could say or yell any swear word of their choosing. For each patient, the amount of time they kept their hand submerged, in seconds, was recorded. Higher times indicate greater pain tolerance.
