Scenario 1) Your friend just purchased a new fish tank last week. They set it up and within a few days had fish in the aquarium. Your friend is coming to you for help because slowly her fish have been dying. You ask your friend to do a water quality test and she finds that there is very high ammonia. Based on the Mini lecture Water Quality: When things go wrong. How would you address this problem and make recommendations to your friend? What could be happening with respect to the biofilter?
Scenario 2) You are starting a new job at a Recirculating Aquaculture System. The business is working to establish its system but has already added steelhead trout to the system. You are worried that the biofilter has not established and notice some fish that have started to die that have brown gills. You do a water quality panel and find that ammonia is 0, nitrite is 1.0 ppm and nitrate is 5 ppm. What do you think is happening in the system and how can you mitigate it?
You will be presented with one scenario related to shellfish health and water quality. Make recommendations on what the problem is and also how to address it.
Scenario 3)
In a shellfish nursery recirculating system that you are monitoring receives piped in seawater. The system has a backflow and turn off valve and can switch to two 2000-gallon tanks of premixed seawater. The water in the system seems really cloudy and the shellfish have all closed their shells. As part of your daily system check you begin to assess ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite and salinity. You notice that the salinity reading on your refractometer is 10 ppt and very different than yesterdays reading of 28ppt. What do you think is happening to the shellfish and how would you mitigate the problem?
