In the U.S., for example, the Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) is the body in charge of regulating, controlling safety standards, and monitoring safety implementation across the entire industry. For this reason, research on safety issues in aviation is broad. Most scholars target significant issues such as pilot shortcomings Schreckengast & Drury (2015), visual-related accidents (bad weather) Jenamani & Kumar (2013), mechanical problems Shahriari & Aydin (2017), and issues arising from safety training (see Ancel et al., 2015). While discussing specific areas of safety concern in aviation is a sound strategy that stretches the research focus, there is a paucity of research reviewing general safety in aviation.
Statement of Purpose
There is compelling evidence that limited research provides a holistic overview of safety concerns in general aviation. This research proposal offers an overview of general aviation safety concerns. According to Boyd (2017), "general aviation includes all civilian aviation apart from operations involving paid passenger transport such as the airlines and charter operations" (p. 1). One of the reasons why the research focuses on general aviation is that fatalities and safety challenges are higher in this area than in airline operations. This research involves a systematic -literature review to offer a comprehensive overview of safety issues in general aviation. The review will include only peer-reviewed articles and credible research journals published in the past twenty years.
Goals
Significance
A systematic literature review provides the highest level of evidence based on the evidence pyramid ranking. This review provides a comprehensive overview of safety concerns in general aviation. The research findings will improve safety training because aviation students can find holistic information on aviation safety in a comprehensive article. The findings will inform researchers of areas that have been over-emphasized and those that have been sidelined in aviation research. Most importantly, the researcher will evaluate the impact of automation in improving safety standards and offer recommendations that could help mitigate accidents and reduce fatalities if accidents occur in general aviation.
