Hypothesis According to statistics by Maison law Legal corporation, a pedestrian has a 45% of being killed by a car traveling 35 mph (common speed limit for suburbs). Having one suburban neighborhood in 5 states assign law enforcement to patrol and monitor the traffic in these neighborhoods will decrease vehicle accidents and save lives, which are worth, on average, over one million dollars in fatal accidents. Also, increasing the width and expanding lanes will benefit increasing traffic flow. Measures - In the experiment, the number of vehicle related accidents and fatalities from the experimental neighborhoods will be taken into account and compared with surrounding, non- experimental suburban neighborhoods. Of any accidents that may occur, the size of the roads and number of lanes they have will be taken into account. It is not feasible to test the effectiveness of these changes without real world circumstances. (vehicles, roads, neighborhoods, pedestrians etc.) However, before applying these ideas to every suburban neighborhood in the U.S, we sampled 5 neighborhoods in the U.S. (Arkansas, Missouri, Texas, Mississippi, Oklahoma) for 6 months. We placed a patrol officer in these neighborhoods for 10 hours a day (8AM-6PM) to monitor traffic. The cost to make the necessary street expansions is $145,000 per neighborhood totaling $725,000. Also, the cost to have officers patrol these neighborhoods is an additional salary of $40/50K. We believe the monetary resources are warranted due to the rate and costs of vehicle accidents and fatalities on suburban roads.
