A popular brand of sports shoes had the following sales records for the past three years: TITIT Demand Year 1 Year 2 Demand Year 3 Demand 1 12 1 16 1 14 25 32 45 76 71 62 84 4 52 4 4 47 Table 1 For example, in Quarter 1 of Year 1, the demand is 12 pairs, whereas in Quarter 2 of Year 1, the demand is 25, and so on. Assume that there is an overall upward trend across the years. (a) Determine the quarterly seasonal factors, i.e. one seasonal factor for each quarter. (b) Assume that the seasonal factors for Q1, Q2, Q3 and Q4 are 0.3, 0.8, 1.7 and 1.2 respectively. (Note that these values are not necessarily the correct answer to part (a). But let's use these values as starting assumption to do part (b).) Under this assumption, determine the de-seasoned time series for the data given in Table 1. (c) Assume that the de-seasoned time series for the data given in Table 1 is 37, 33, 44, 43.5, 50, 43, 40, 52, 44, 60, 49 and 40. (Note that these values are not necessarily the correct answer to part (b). But let's use these values as starting assumption to do part (c).) Under this assumption, use regression analysis to determine the slope and the intercept. (d) Based on your answer for part (c) and the assumption stated in part (b), predict the demand for this brand of sports shoes for the 4th quarter of Year 4 (i.e. Q4 of Year 4)
