As an HR manager I worry that adopting a case-by-case basis approach can significantly affect the culture of a workplace. I am often faced with the dilemma of how to bring balance. While our front-line employees are still required to wear medical masks all the time at work, regulations would suggest that we could drop these rules in our admin areas. In solidarity to support those who do not have a choice, we have kept these rules across the board, until they can be adopted by all employees in an effort to promote equity.
Equity in the workplace is more relevant than ever before so all company policies need to support the safety of employees but also be fair and ethically sound. Creating a policy that requires one group of employees to follow one set of rules and then allows another group more flexibility creates animosity amongst teams and can create culture that does not support company values, due to perceived favoritism.
