That brings us to a fun way of explaining subnet masks. Suppose all the tall sticks shown in Figure $2$ belong to one large, subnetted network. The short stick represents the subnet mask for all the subnets. The height of the short stick tells us that the subnet mask is the lower four colors of each stick. For example, we can conclude that Sticks $4,14,$ and $17$ are in the same subnet because their four lower colors match. How many subnets are in the network? Which sticks belong in the same subnet as Stick $5?$ As Stick $6?$ How many colors are used to define the network ID for the entire large network?
