The above compound is an ionic liquid, N-butyl,N-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide, or BMP-TFSI for short. Create a sample procedure
Question:
Create a sample procedure that would create and purify BMP-TFSI. Using what you've learned this semester, choose and describe the method of reaction, the solvents used at any point, the purification techniques, and any characterization you would want to do.
The reaction to create this involves the combination reaction of N-methylpyrrolidine and 1-bromobutane to create BMP-Br (a solid) followed by an ion exchange with Li-TFSI (a solid) to create BMP-TFSI (a liquid).
Here are things you cannot look up that you need to keep in mind:
BMP-TFSI is not soluble in water or nonpolar solvents
BMP-Br and Li-TFSI are not soluble in hexane, toluene, diethyl ether, or other nonpolar solvents.
Li-TFSI is only soluble in highly polar solvents (alcohols and water)
BMP-TFSI will never boil [This is a feature of ionic liquids]
TLC will be useless, don't try it.
