The Acme Company is a manufacturer of coffee tables. Acme has two product lines: the Family Room (FR) table (a larger table) and the Living Room (LR) table (a smaller table built with more expensive wood). The primary raw materials are wood, glass table top sheets, and decorative knobs. Each FR table requires ten feet of wood and the LR table requires eight feet of a more expensive wood. Acme makes both FR and LR table tops out of the same glass sheets but there is more waste when making LR table tops. Each FR table requires five decorative knobs and the LR table requires only three decorative knobs. Other raw materials, such as screws and glue, are insignificant in cost and are treated as indirect material.

Acmes controller is preparing the annual master budget for 2021 and has gathered the following information:

  1. Sales in the fourth quarter of 2020 are expected to be 45,000 FR tables and 41,000 LR tables. The sales manager predicts that over the next two years the sales in each product line will increase by 6,000 units each quarter over the previous quarter (first quarter 2021 sales will increase from the fourth quarter 2020 sales referred to herein). This forecast is based on a review of the historical sales data over the past five years.

(100% of Acmes receivables are collectable.)

  1. Currently, the FR table sells for $325 and the LR table sells for $490. These prices are expected remain constant at these levels throughout 2021.

  1. Acmes production manager attempts to end each quarter with enough finished goods inventory to cover 28% of the next quarters sales. Direct materials are delivered on a just in time basis (no inventory).

  1. All Acme direct material purchase are made on account and 85% of each quarters purchases are paid in cash during the same quarter as the purchase. The other 15% is paid in the following quarter. Payments made in the first quarter of 2021 for direct materials purchased in the fourth quarter of 2020 will amount to $1,793,344.
