The American Psychological Association developed a Working Group on the issue of repressed memories and false memory syndrome. The Group stated that 

: 1) repressed memories is a myth; individuals who are abused always remember the event

2) false memory syndrome is a myth; an individual's recollection of events are always mostly accurate 

3) both false memories and repressed memories are possible; the mechanisms behind these memories is not well understood 

4) recovered memories are a myth
