2. Not everyone in the Colonies supported the revolt. Merchants (especially smugglers like Hancock) and land speculators (like Washington, Franklin, and Jefferson) typi- cally supported the revolt, as did about 40% of the residents of the 13 colonies. Some groups where support for the revolt was lowest include: residents of New York City, the Quakers, the Scotts, the Anglicans, Slaves and Free Blacks, and Native Ameri- cans. In addition, nearby colonies such as Nova Scotia, Quebec, West Florida, East Florida, and the colonies of the West Indies such as Jamaica did not join the revolt.
