The Assessment Task The objective of the case analysis is to produce a report that provides a focused, in-depth, and objective, evaluation of the attractiveness of a specified (by you) 'place' for foreign direct investment (FDI). The perspective you are required to adopt is that of the destination 'place' (rather than that of a particular business). You need to make two initial choices/ decisions: 1. The 'place' is for you to select. It can be a country/ nation-state (e.g. Singapore, Malaysia, UK, etc) or region within a nation-state (e.g. Johor, Queensland, British Columbia, Sulawesi). 2. You can evaluate your selected 'place' from the perspective of a particular industry (e.g. semi-conductors, petrochemicals, textiles etc) or from a more general 'business' perspective. Ultimately, your report should identify the key strengths and weaknesses of your selected 'place' as a destination for FDI. However, while your analysis is from the FDI destination perspective, you also need to consider the risks (upside and downside) for any business thinking about investing in your selected 'place'. You should, wherever relevant, refer to the factors underlying the FDI location decisions of businesses and the extent to which your selected 'place' meets the FDI destination requirements of businesses looking to internationalise their activities. You should draw on relevant theory, concepts and practice developed in Workshops 1-5 and from your own learning beyond the course content. In this context you may wish to frame your analysis to combine Dunning's OLI paradigm with strategic management approaches such as PESTLE, Enterprise Risk Management, political risk analysis and/ or Global Production Network (GPN)/ Global Value Chain (GVC) approaches.
