the assistant store manager, Mrs Jane Cupido and security officer Frank Khumalo in an office with the suspect, Norm Thomas. Mrs Cupido informs them that security officer Khumalo saw Norm take a pack of fresh chicken from the refrigerator and put the item in his backpack. When Norm tried to walk out of the store the security officer Khumalo stopped him and asked him if he was going to pay for the item in his backpack. Norm denied that he had a pack of fresh chicken in his backpack. The security officer searched Norm and found the item hidden underneath his clothes. The security officer asked for proof of payment, but Norm failed to provide proof of payment. Security officer Khumalo made a civilian arrest and detained Norm Thomas until Sergeant Present and Constable Today arrived at Shoprite. Constable Today made sure that Norm's person was searched again, and he found the following articles on his person: a black wallet with two R20 notes and a pocketknife. Constable Today then seized all the items. Constable Gift arrested Norm and asked his permission to return the stolen property to the manager of Shoprite. Norm gave permission to return the pack of fresh chicken. Constable Today completed the SAPS 299 and returned the items to the assistant store manager, Mrs Jane Cupido. At SAPS Stella a case was opened, Stella CAS 5/01/2023 and Norm Thomas was handed over to the CSC commander at 16:30, WO Peter Francke who detained Norm Thomas in OB 56/01/2023, SAPS 14/4/01/2023, detainee constitutional rights were explained SAPS 14A/Q687895, SAPS 22/L956485, SAPS 13/25/2023.
