2. One recommendation that was left out of this edition of the book is the "sandwich technique," but I like it. This is from the original 1994 edition of Reviving Ophelia:

"I recommend the sandwich technique for giving feedback (to your daughter): Start positive, slip in the criticism or concern, and then end positive. For example: 'I appreciate your honesty about drinking with your friends. I'm concerned that could be dangerous for you in a variety of ways. I'm glad you trusted me enough to tell me. I love you.'"

Apply the sandwich technique to this scenario: Your thirteen-year-old daughter (or sister or cousin, etc.) tells you, "I think I'm ready to have sex." In this scenario, you don't think she's ready. Use the sandwich technique to share your concerns.
