The average cost of a university education is around $50,000. The vast majority of empirical and scientific studies suggest that young people who attend university reap significant financial and non-financial benefits. However, some low impact factor studies argue that the high expense of a university degree does not outweigh the benefits of getting a degree. The following information was gathered from several reports and articles. Time-Value money has been factored into all of the data

  1. A highly ambitious and goal-oriented graduate will earn $450,000 more than their counterparts over the course of their working lives. The likelihood is 15%.
  2. Agraduate who is ambitious but not goal-oriented will earn $300,000 more than their colleagues over the course of their career. The likelihood is 40%.
  3. The average graduate with a family-oriented attitude will earn $200,000 more than their colleagues over the course of their working lives. The likelihood is 35%.
  4. A low-achievement graduate with a poor work ethic will earn $100,000 more than their peers over the course of their career. The likelihood is 10%.

Determine the expected return and the risk (standard deviation) of a university degree.

Note: The reason some individuals believe a degree is not worth studying base on empirical study is not correct, since over 90% of financially and non-financially successful people have a degree. The reason is this believe is exist because when the 10% who do not have a degree become successful, everyone and the media will focus on that 10%.
