The Barati family, made up of Ali, Fatima, Razieh, Rayan and Abia Barati, have been granted a refugee visa subclass 200 and arrived in Australia three weeks ago. Originally from Iran, the husband, Ali, is 45 years old and was a jeweller in his home country. His wife, Fatima, is 38 and taught science in high school. They have three daughters; Razieh aged 16, Rayan aged 7 and Abia aged eight months. The family are practicing Shia Muslims and speak Persian (Farsi). The wife and older daughter (Razieh) speak some English. The Barati family fled Iran after their now sixteen-year-old daughter was kidnapped and held hostage for several months. They sold their house and many of their possessions to pay the ransom. They spent three years in Amman, Jordan, living with relatives waiting for resettlement. During this time Abia was born, and due to their circumstances of not being able to work, their remaining savings whittled away, and Razieh and Rayan did not attend school, or have regular health check-ups due to lack of affordability. When she was able, Fatima home-schooled her daughters, but for the last year or so, whilst pregnant with Abia and after her third child's birth, home-schooling ceased. The family have been provided with transitional housing with all utilities are connected and have been registered with Centrelink and set up a bank account as part of their immediate settlement needs. In the meeting Fatima speaks more freely due to her English language skills, and Razieh will speak in English is ask a direct question. Ali and Rayan need an interpreter for all discussion. Fatima and Razieh may choose to use the interpreter for certain topics of discussion where the English words are either unfamiliar to them, or the emotional load of the topic is confronting.
