The best way to gain an understanding of project management tools is to use it for a project. In the assignment, you will do just that, and you will use Word and Excel (Word processor and Spreadsheet) to do it.

To begin, I would like you to consider that you are the owner of a construction business, and you have been tasked with building a fence around the property of a client.

Task 1 - Create an Project Baseline Plan for the project

A baseline in project management is a clearly defined starting point for your project plan. It is a fixed reference point to measure and compare your project's progress against. This allows you to assess the performance of your project over time. The plan discusses the basic project. A project baseline typically has three components:

  • Schedule: Scheduling is the process of assigning work to be done to departments or even specific machines or persons.Identify all the major steps required to produce the product, then arrange the steps into the best possible sequence, and estimate the time required to complete each step.
  • Cost: Determine the projected costby taking into account all relevant factors, including materials, hourly rates, available resources, and other costs. Link this budget plan to your schedule to ensure the two are aligned.
  • Develop the Project's Scope: A scope statement is a list of project objectives and deliverables. to complete it, break down all the work required to achieve the deliverables into individual tasks and subtasks complete with detailed descriptions.

Task 2 - Create an work breakdown structure for the project

In order to develop the detail that is required in a project schedule, project managers use a tool called a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS). The WBS is a hierarchical reflection of all the work in the project in terms of deliverables. In order to produce these deliverables, work must be performed.

A typical approach in developing a WBS is to start at the highest level, with the product of the project. From there, the project is broken down into its components - a process called decomposition - which makes the project more manageable. Each individual element at the lowest level of the WBS is called a task. Each task item in the WBS needs a time and cost estimate. With this information, it is possible to plan, schedule, and budget the project. At the task level, a single person must be identified for being responsible for that task. (for larger projects, organizational units, rather than a single individual, are responsible for a task) This person/organizational unit is expected to manage the competition of that task and be accountable for its delivery.

Task 3 - Create an project schedule using a Gantt chart for the project

Develop a Gantt chart to schedule the project using a software application like Excel. Define who is responsible for the respective task, the timelines and the sequence of tasks.

Once you have this completed, please place it in the appropriate Drop Box.
