The Black Sox Baseball Club and Roark Designs conducted extensive negotiations concerning the development of a new ballpark. During those negotiations, the owner of the Black Soxsaid to the owner of Roark "Look, we both know that this stadium will eventuallybe built. The lawyers will have to work out the details and of course nothing will be official until we sign a formal contract. But, as far as I am concerned, we might as well get started. I can promise you right now that if you draft the plans,we'll pay you$100,000.00 for your efforts. Roark spent a considerable amount of time and money preparing a blueprint for a new stadium. Unfortunately, the proposal collapsed when through no fault of either the Black Sox or Roark, the local government denied zoning approval for the project. Roark nevertheless insists that the Black Sox abide by the promise made by their President. Will the doctrine of promissory estoppel assist Roark in that regard?
