The California Department of Consumer Affairs is a valuable source of support and information for consumers and business people, including landlords and tenants. The Department website has considerable information to help answer common (and not so common) legal questions faced by "consumers".

Among the publications available on the website was a very thorough document entitled: "California Tenants: A Guide to Residential Tenants' and Landlords 'Rights and Responsibilities". For some reason, the Department decided to remove this brochure and post a notice that the Department does not assist with landlord/tenant disputes in the summer of 2018. However, the brochure is posted in other locations, and though originally published in 2012, it is still a valuable resource for renters (I also have referred landlords to the resource).
