The Caribbean Maritime University is the only Maritime training university in the English-speaking Caribbean. The school officially became a university in 2017. Prior to this, the institution was called the Caribbean Maritime Institute which in 2007 had approximately 300 students and 40 members of staff. Since then, the institution has grown to approximately 5000 students as it attained university status in 2017.
